Network News Transport Protocol

The Network News Transport Protocol is defined by RFC 977. The first implementation was done by Phil Lapsley for BSD Unix. Since Phil had to move on to other things, he passed the support duties to Stan Barber around 1987 and Stan had been working with it until a few years ago. This software is no longer maintained. Other versions should be used where possible.

The IETF should be releasing the succesor to RFC 977 approved in 2005 sometime soon. The last draft version is waiting in the RFC Editor's queue. Those implementing NNTP should consult this version for the latest information on protocol compliance. Once the RFC is published, this page will be updated to reflect this information.
