Very Early Macintosh Models

These pages hold photos of, and notes about, the early componenet (separate CPU and monitor) Mac desktop models - those with the 68020 and 68030 CPU chips. However, all Powerbook models are on the Powerbook pages.

Remember - I am NOT responsible for any damage done to any Mac by anyone trying to replace their logic board battery!

IIsi

Here is the inside of a 2si - with the cover off.

A Low Quality Photo Of A 2si You can see the purple battery in the middle - with a cage over it. The hard drive is below and to the left and the floppy drive is below to the right. The SIMMS are to the left of the battery.

The second photo is the same 2si without the battery cage.

This next photo is for the clock chippers out there - the oscillator you replace to speed up the 2si is the one to the far left (in the row of silver cans).

In this next picture, you can (sort of) see that the silver can on the far left is a bit higher than the other three - because it is sitting on a 14 pin socket. To change CPU speeds you now pull the oscillator out of the socket and put in a faster one. This 2si is now running at a bit over 27 MHz - so it performs better than the 2ci (without a cache card).

At Least This One Is A JPEG

2cx, 2ci

Look at the directions for the Quadra 700 as well - they use a very similar case.

The hard drive is the silver thing to the lower right, the floppy drive is under it, and then the battery is under that. Getting to the battery requires that you take all that stuff off, and you have to know how to get the drives out of there. Please excuse the hardware jargon :-) The 2ci page (see the link below) gives directions for how to disassemble the ci, and the cx is very similar.

Here is the inside of a 2ci (the photo is a bit fuzzy).

yes, its a gif too

And you can see the purple battery in it's cage against the far side of the Mac.

You 2ci owners out there should have a cache card - it makes a big difference in the performance; the cards are usually available on the used market.

And you must visit the 2ci page for all the 2ci information you could ever ask for and then some.

Another GIF That Should Be A JPEG Here's a photo of the batteries in this model:

The batteries are the two blue objects, and they are both in cages like the LC battery.

About these models, McOrphan writes:

The two 3.6V batteries on the Mac II/IIx are labeled B1 and B2. The rearmost B1 battery powers the real-time clock and PRAM. The frontmost B2 battery is involved in the boot/power-on process. It normally will fail before B1 if the batteries are changed together as they should be.

Thanks McOrphan!
