At 9:03am PST, Bill Norton calls the meeting to order with a classical overture. Bill notes that the agenda is very full and that it will be critical to keep to schedule. This is the seventh NANOG. Bill wisely decides not to tell one of his classic jokes. There are over 250 people registered, by far the largest group so far.
Bill opens a discussion of the NANOG Charter with a story about how a company had a large machine under the care of engineer that was paid about $70,000. The company decided things worked so well that they let the engineer go. The machine dies three months later. After some effort, the company decides to pay $100k to the recently-fired engineer who with little effort fixes the machine. The engineer spends only a few minutes to get it working.
