Our conclusion is that ATM is not a proper technology for
Internet backbones.
The only reason ATM is considered at all is because the
present generation of native IP routers is unable to keep up
with the growth of Internet traffic.
When multi-gigabit native IP routers become available there
will be no technical or economical reason for ATM-based backbone
networks to exist.
Native IP routing is clearly superior to ATM
in many aspects, and does not have the fundamental scaling problems
inherent in ATM-based networks.
Ironically, the perceived weakness of IP, the independent routing
of packets, can be turned into its major strength.
Pluris Inc's patent-pending technology allows the building of
terabit per second native IP routers from off-the-shelf
components available today.
We expect that our technology will make ATM, tag switching, and other
hybrid techniques obsolete even before they are
deployed in the Internet backbones.
