Today's architecture -- Shared FDDI, Gigaswitch, 1 DS3/router (but that is being relaxed)
Coming -- DEC Gigaswitch FDDI, support for FFDT, up to three DS-3s or one OC-3 per router, DS/1 support is going away.
The Gigaswith/FDDI is great. We love it.
There are 35 customers, seven of which are in queue.
FFDT! FDDI, Full Duplex Technology.
This has always been an option -- it enables two stations to transmit at the same time. Cisco now supports this with the VIP-2 FDF adapter. This should extend the bandwidth on the FDDI to 200 Mbs (theoretically). The Gigaswitch already supports this (since DEC developed it).
Right now, Sprintlink is testing the equipment. If all goes well, it will enabled at the NAP and tested.
In this architecture, all hosts are attached to the Gigaswitch and the shared FDDI will be used for backup. This expected to be deployed before the end of this year.
To address customer needs, larger routers will be accomodated (Cisco 7507). DC power is also available. Up to three DS3s or 1 OC-3 will be permitted per router. There is a 60-day engineering cycle. Must sign Terms & Conditions and coordinate with NAP Engineering.
The first OC-3 customer will be installed in December or January.
Stats are available from the same place.
Usage has gently increased since the last NANOG. The average has moved up to just less than 300 Mb/sec.
